PRODUCT RESEARCH

How to find products that actually sell on eBay UK

How to find products that actually sell on eBay UK

The number one reason new eBay stores struggle is not their listings or their photos. It is that they bought stock nobody wanted at a price that leaves no profit. Product research is what separates a hobby from a business, and it is a process you can repeat.

1. Start with demand, not with a supplier

Do not begin with whatever is cheap. Begin with what buyers are already buying. Use the sold items filter on eBay.co.uk and the research tools inside Seller Hub to see what has really sold, at what price and how often. Active listings only show what sellers hope to sell.

  • Look at sales over the last 90 days, not just last week.
  • Check how many items sold compared with how many are listed (sell-through).
  • Note the typical selling price range and the lowest price that still sells.

2. Work out the real margin before you buy

Many sellers only compare buy price and sell price. The real calculation includes everything:

Example only: sells at £24.99. Cost of the item £9.00, postage £3.20, packaging £0.40, eBay fees and promotion (assume roughly 15% for a cautious estimate, check your actual rate) £3.75. Profit about £8.64, a margin of around 35%. If a supplier price rise or a returned parcel wipes that out, the product is too thin.

Aim for a margin that survives returns, damaged parcels and price changes. Low-priced items with high postage costs are the usual margin killers.

Where a £24.99 sale goes (example)
  • Item cost£9.00
  • Postage£3.20
  • Packaging£0.40
  • eBay fees (est. 15%)£3.75
  • Profit£8.64

Example figures for illustration. Check your own fee rate and postage cost.

3. Check the competition

  • Too many identical listings at rock-bottom prices: usually a race to the bottom.
  • A few strong sellers with poor listings: opportunity. Better photos, titles and item specifics can win share.
  • One dominant seller: hard to beat unless you have a price or supply advantage.

4. Avoid risky products

  • Branded goods you cannot verify. Counterfeit and unauthorised branded items are a leading cause of eBay account problems. Only sell branded items with proof of authenticity and a legitimate source.
  • Restricted or prohibited items. Read eBay's policy for your category before you buy stock.
  • Products with safety rules. Electricals, toys, cosmetics and children's products need correct UK marking and safety compliance. If you cannot show it, leave the category alone.

5. Choose reliable suppliers

A product is only as good as your ability to get it quickly and consistently. Ask for invoices, test a sample, confirm the stock level and dispatch time, and have a backup supplier. Long or unreliable supply chains lead to cancelled orders and late deliveries, both of which hurt your seller standards.

6. Test small, then scale

Buy a small quantity first. Create excellent listings, wait for real sales data, and only then reorder in volume. Watch your views, watchers, conversion and returns. A product that gets views but no sales usually has a listing or price problem; one with sales and returns has a quality or description problem.

7. Mind the seasons

Demand moves through the year: garden items in spring, gifts in Q4, school items in late summer. Check last year's sold data for the same period so you do not buy stock too late or too early.

Frequently asked questions

Start with the sold items filter on eBay.co.uk and the research tools available inside Seller Hub. They show real sales, prices and demand.

There is no universal figure, but you need a margin that still works after fees, postage, packaging, returns and price changes. Calculate the full cost before buying stock.

Only if you can prove they are genuine and legitimately sourced. Brand owners report suspected counterfeit or unauthorised items to eBay, which can lead to removed listings and account restrictions.
