eBay account suspended or restricted? What UK sellers should do first

eBay account suspended or restricted? What UK sellers should do first

Opening your inbox to an email that says your eBay account has been restricted or suspended is a horrible moment, especially if the account is how you earn a living. The good news: many restrictions are about something specific that can be explained or fixed. The bad news: panicking and acting fast in the wrong way is one of the most common reasons they become permanent.

This guide explains what usually triggers a restriction on eBay.co.uk, what to do in the first 24 hours, and how to write an appeal that gives eBay what it needs.

Honest note: eBay alone decides whether an account is reinstated. Nobody can promise an outcome, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What a good appeal can do is give eBay a clear, credible reason to review your case.

Why eBay restricts or suspends accounts

The email from eBay normally names a reason or a policy. The most common categories are:

  • Seller performance: eBay measures cases closed without seller resolution, transaction defect rate and late delivery rate. If your performance falls below the minimum standards, selling limits or restrictions can follow.
  • Policy issues: prohibited or restricted items, misleading listings, fee avoidance, or breaking the rules around off-eBay contact.
  • Intellectual property: reports from brand owners (VeRO) for counterfeit, unlicensed or incorrectly described branded goods.
  • Identity and account verification: eBay could not verify who you are, or details on the account do not match.
  • Linked or duplicate accounts: eBay thinks another account connected to you has a problem.
  • Payments and risk: unusual activity, payout holds or buyer complaints.

The first 24 hours: what to do

  1. Read the email slowly, twice. Note the exact reason, the policy it names, the date, and any deadline for responding. Screenshot it.
  2. Do not open a new account to carry on selling. Creating another account while one is restricted breaks eBay's rules and is a fast route to a permanent ban across everything linked to you.
  3. Stop doing what might have caused it. If it is about a certain item or listing, end those listings straight away.
  4. Look in Seller Hub and My eBay messages. There is often more detail than the email, including which listings or orders are involved.
  5. Collect your evidence. Supplier invoices, receipts, proof of postage, tracking, buyer messages, photos and anything that shows you acted properly.
  6. Deal with open orders. Ship what you can legitimately ship and keep buyers informed so new cases do not pile up.

How to write an appeal eBay can act on

Most failed appeals fail for the same reason: they argue and complain rather than explain. A strong appeal is short, factual and calm. A simple structure works well:

  1. What happened. Show that you understand the exact reason, in your own words.
  2. Why it happened. The honest root cause, such as a supplier issue, a misunderstanding of a policy or a process gap. Taking responsibility where it is yours helps.
  3. What you have already fixed. Listings ended or corrected, processes changed, supplier replaced, documents attached.
  4. How it will not happen again. Two or three concrete steps, not general promises.
  5. Evidence. Attach invoices, tracking and anything that backs up your story.

Keep the tone professional. Avoid threats, copy and pasting the same text repeatedly and long emotional messages. If eBay asks for specific documents, send exactly what is asked for.

The 5-part appeal structure

  2. 2

  3. 3

  4. 4

Mistakes that make things worse

  • Creating a second account to keep selling.
  • Sending several appeals at once through different channels with different stories.
  • Changing or deleting listings and records that eBay might want to review.
  • Asking buyers to contact you off eBay or to change feedback.
  • Paying anyone who promises guaranteed reinstatement or says they have a “contact inside eBay”.
Do and don't while your account is restricted

Do

  • Read the notice twice and screenshot it
  • End listings linked to the issue
  • Gather invoices, tracking and messages
  • Send one clear, factual appeal
  • Keep serving open orders

Don't

  • Open a second account
  • Send several appeals with different stories
  • Delete records eBay may review
  • Move buyers off eBay
  • Pay for guaranteed reinstatement

How long does it take?

It depends on the reason, the account history and how complete your appeal is. Some cases are reviewed within days, others take weeks, and some are not reversed. We would rather say that plainly than quote a number that sounds good.

When it makes sense to get help

If the account is your main income, if the reason is unclear, or if you have already had an appeal declined, a second pair of eyes can help. A specialist can read the notice, work out the likely root cause, build the evidence pack and write the appeal in the structure eBay responds to. Preventing the next restriction

Once you are back, protect the account: keep your defect and late delivery rates low, describe items accurately, source from verifiable suppliers, avoid restricted or branded items you cannot prove are genuine, and keep a clean record of invoices. Our guide to starting out on eBay UK covers the setup basics that prevent a lot of problems.

Frequently asked questions

No. Opening a new account to avoid a restriction breaks eBay's rules and can get every linked account banned permanently. Deal with the restriction on the existing account.

It varies with the reason and the account history. Some are reviewed in days, others take longer and some are not reversed. Be cautious of anyone who guarantees a timeline or outcome.

eBay says a high late delivery rate on its own will not make an account Below Standard, though a low rate is needed for Top Rated status. Cases closed without seller resolution and your transaction defect rate matter for the minimum standard.
